“Thanks for having us over for dinner,” Jeremiah said, shaking hands with Harv, while Katie suffered another hug from Sadie. “I’ll see you at the Blue Bird for lunch on Monday.”

Harv pumped his hand so hard, Jeremiah wouldn’t have been surprised if he ended up with a sprained wrist. “You want to cast a line or two tomorrow morning?”

“I can’t go fishing tomorrow, Harv,” Jeremiah said, thinking fast. “I have some things I need to get done around the cabin.”

He watched Harv wink at his wife. “All righty. Let’s make it Sunday after church service.”

“Sorry,” Jeremiah said, shaking his head. “I have plans then, too.” As a way to appease the old guy, he added, “Why don’t we plan a trip for Monday afternoon. I’ve been wanting to try my luck on the Little River.”

“Sounds good to me,” Harv said happily.

“Well, I need to get Katie home before it gets dark,” Jeremiah said, carefully omitting who’s place he was referring to—his or hers.

“Tell your mother I said hello the next time you talk to her,” Sadie said, grinning.

Katie nodded. “I will.”

As they walked down the steps and over to his motorcycle parked in the driveway, Jeremiah noticed that Katie looked as if she was going to explode. “So what do you think she’ll be telling everyone about us?” he asked, careful to keep his voice low as he lifted his leg over the back of the Harley and sat down.

“That you and I are either having a torrid affair, or getting ready to take a trip down the aisle.” Katie straddled the seat behind him. “And the first person she’s going to tell will be my mother.”

“But I thought she said for you to tell your mom hello the next time the two of you talked.”

Chuckling, he raised an eyebrow at the unladylike word Katie muttered as she rested her hands at his waist. “Sadie won’t let her shirttail hit her backside before she’s on the phone with my mother in California. By the time we get to the edge of town, she’ll be telling Mom all about me riding around town on your motorcycle with you, and that we’re probably going up Piney Knob to your cabin to do no telling what.”

“But I told her I was taking you home.”

“Yes, but by the time Sadie puts her spin on it—”

“I’ll be whisking you up the mountain where we’ll run naked through the woods and make mad passionate love on the banks of the stream behind the cabin,” he guessed.

“Something like that.” She rested her head against the back of his shoulder. “I can’t wait to hear what she has to say when I become pregnant.”

Jeremiah didn’t say anything as he started the Harley and steered it out onto the road leading up to the cabin. He couldn’t. He was suddenly too angry to speak without using words that weren’t fit for a lady’s ears.

What Katie had just told him didn’t set well at all. Sadie Jenkins could say what the hell she wanted about him, but the woman had better not start spreading rumors about Katie.
